River rampage rocks a family

The first time Gayle Smith told her story to the Town Council, there were grown men on the dais and throughout the audience with tears in their eyes.

"We’re not looking for a handout," said Smith. "We just need your help."

Separated from four of her seven children for more than a year, the mother and wife stood with her husband by her side talking about the frustration and pain her family has lived through over the past nine years.

"I almost started to cry," said Councilman Jamie Barberio after the meeting.

Gayle Smith purchased the five-bedroom, ranch-style home on the banks of the Rockaway River in 1999. Before signing on the dotted line, the couple went to town hall and questioned staff in the engineering department, and even then mayor Mimi Letts, about whether the area was prone to flooding.

Regional Master plan complete for better or worse

It took 74 meetings spread out over three and a half years for the Highlands Council to pass a Regional Master Plan that almost no one believes will protect water for five million New Jersey residents. At least that was the asser-tion of the more than 30 people who addressed the council prior to the final votes on the amendments and the adoption of the plan.

The reasons for the skepticism and outright fear for the future varied among the almost 150 farmers, landowners, environmentalists and residents gathered at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown. Some were there to wit-ness history, others to lament their role in the process that led to the final document but most just wanted one final opportunity to voice their concerns about the course being set by the 14-member council.

A decade of creativity at Baldwin Oaks

Ten years ago, Baldwin Oaks resident Naomi Levine began a weekly art group, with help from Sister Bernadette Weller who became the group’s instructor. The recent Retrospective Art Show was the 10th for the group. Baldwin Oaks is a 250-unit apartment project for senior citizens in Parsippany.

College Wrap-up for Aug. 20

Mickey Norton from Boonton High School finished his career as the all-time leader in points (123) for the Muhlen-berg College (Allentown, PA) men’s lacrosse team. He was given honorable mention at All Centennial Conference this spring. The Mules had an overall season record of 10-5 during the 2008 season.

Other locals who played men’s lacrosse at Muhlenberg College included Brent Siebold, from Mountain Lakes High School, who netted 23 goals as a freshman for the Mules. Tim Martin, a senior from Boonton, and Tom Brant, a freshman for Mountain Lakes, both contributed significantly to the team at Muhlenberg this past spring as well.

Mark Lane and Austin Winter, both from Mountain Lakes High School, played for the Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA) men’s lacrosse team this past spring. Winter started in all 15 games as a sophomore attack-man for the Bison and led the team in assists (33). He also netted 19 goals for Bucknell. Lane saw action in 14 games and tallied a goal and four assists as a senior midfielder. The Bison posted an overall season record of 10-5 and they were 6-1 on their home field.
